Airpower over the Midwest, Scott AFB, IL
September 11-12, 2010
(Photos taken 9-12.)
The Scott AFB Airpower over the Midwest really
rocked with two of the US Air Force's remaining F-4 Phantoms flying
separately at different times during the show. F-4E 72-494 took off
with an F-16 to open the Bears football game in Chicago and gave us a
fighter break pass on return, while F-4E 71-237 later participated in the
Heritage Flight with the F-16 Demo from Shaw AFB.
A typical Phantom Heritage
Flight usually has a total of seven passes involving the F-4, three solo
before forming up on the Demo Aircraft, three formation passes in this
case with the F-16, and then a high speed pass afterwards. I
captured the first six but for the 7th at Scott I just put the camera down
and enjoyed the moment without looking through a lens finder.
Phantoms Phorever!!!
Along with the F-4's Scott had
flying warbird acts Tora! Tora! Tora!, Randy Ball in his exciting Mig-17F,
Gregory "Wired" Colyer in his T-33 all the way from California, and the
Commemorative Air Force's (CAF) B-25 "Show Me" from St. Louis, MO along
with a great line up of static warbirds on the ramp.
There were two Phantoms at the show and both
flew. 72-494 left with an F-16 940042 to open the football game at
Soldier Field in Chicago and returned while 71-237 did the show and Heritage
Flight.
Gregg Vallero of St. Charles, MO owns this great looking T-6.
B-25 "Show Me" from the Missouri Wing of the
CAF.
Nicky and Jordan Brown brought their Beech
C-45 in from Terre Haute, IN for public viewing.
Bruce Koch from Michigan displayed his Vultee
SNV Trainer.
Clyde Zellers from Springfield, IL had this
great looking SNJ on static display.
72-494 taxiing out en-route to Soldier Field.
On its way!! Note the heat signature.
Gregory "Wired" Colyer just lifting off to
begin his great display in the T-33.
Greg waving at the crowd as he taxies back in.
F-4 Phantom 72-794 returns with the F-16
from the Soldier Field flyover.
This was great, seeing and hearing the
venerable F-4 return from its mission in Chicago.
Fighter Break!
Randy Ball on his way out to the active
runway.
Who would have ever thought back in the late
60's and early 70's that one would see this. Former arch enemies
over the skies of North Vietnam, the Mig-17F and the F-4E photographed
together at a Midwestern Air show in 2010.
Randy lights the after burner. Mig-17
are known for their long "burner" flame trail.
Randy cut the corner marker a little close on
this pass but that is why one stations himself at the end of the spectator
line.
Tora! Tora! Tora! Here they come!!
All eight of them.
Note the Tora Pyro Team member in the
background getting ready to blow something up!
F-4 71-237 rotating.
Lifting off! Once again the Phantom
proves that if you put big enough engines in something anything can fly.
Here comes F-4 pass number 1. The best
spot at a show is at the end of the flight line so during the rare
occurrence of an F-4 cutting the corner markers a little too close you are
there. This looks like this is going to be one of them!
Even the Moon wanted to get in on the action.
Pass number 2. The high speed pass.
Smoketrails!!
Pass number 3 was down and dirty.
Pass number 4 is Heritage Flight pass 1 coming
around the corner marker.
Pass number 5 down the runway.
Pass number 6 from behind the crowd at 500
feet.
For pass number 7 I put the camera down and
enjoyed the sight and sound of the Phantom in a high speed pass.
71-237 deploying its drag chute as B-25 "Show Me" from the Missouri Wing
of the CAF taxies out for its warbird demo.
This is the fourth time I have seen "Show Me
in 2010, including when she was part of the Doolittle Flyover Tribute at
the Air Force Museum in April.
B-25s can do low passes also. Looks like
the Blue Angel's ground crew have the best seat in the house.
Back in from the right with the bomb bay doors
open.
Another pass as the Blues get ready to
perform.
"Show Me" landing as "Fat Albert" prepares to
take the runway.
